Research, Evaluation and Development Team

Professional Salaried Position with Benefits (100%). United States citizenship or permanent residency is required for this position.

CASAS is seeking a Data Analyst for research and evaluation projects related to adult literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), and other related content areas. The analyst will provide support to the Research, Evaluation and Development team to analyze data with basic statistical methods, interprets results, and provide written summaries of data analyses. The analyst will assume responsibility for research project data including data collection, extraction, processing, analysis, storage, and security. The position requires working knowledge of SPSS, Structured Query Language (SQL), basic programming, relational databases and Microsoft Office Windows® (Excel, PowerPoint, Word and others). Candidates will take a test on basic programming and statistics.


  • Perform data tabulation and analysis, accurately code variables from original data, manipulate and reformat data using  SQL , basic programming codes (Microsoft Visual FoxPro/Access/SQL/C#), and statistical software (SPSS)
  • Use Microsoft Office Windows program such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to prepare data reports, graphical and pictorial illustrations of data and presentations
  • Assist in all aspects of data collection, extraction, cleaning, and storage
  • Assist in the development and writing of research and evaluation reports
  • Analyze and evaluate item response test data regarding Item Response Theory (IRT) and classical test theory
  • Perform research and investigation in regard to an operational Computer-Adaptive Testing (CAT)
  • Provide technical assistance
  • Other duties as assigned by the research team


  • Minimum four-year degree with some coursework in statistics, basic programming, educational measurement. Advanced degree is preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office Windows programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access
  • Strong knowledge of SQL, basic programming in either Visual FoxPro/Visual C#/MS SQL/Access and relational databases
  • Knowledge of statistical principles and procedures including frequency tables, crosstabs, and correlation procedures using SPSS
  • Familiarity with common item analysis and IRT statistical software, (ITEMAN, Winsteps) is a plus

POSITION TITLE: Technical Editor

Professional Salaried Position with Benefits (100%)

The technical editor is responsible for writing and/or editing of publications that include, but are not limited to, technical manuals, assessments, training materials and related support materials, research reports, communications to clients, conference materials, and other general copy in both paper and electronic formats. Provides editorial support for the online and website environment. Edits and writes with a focus on organization, writing style, accuracy of content, and consideration of the target audience. Meticulous attention to detail, outstanding organizational skills, and an ability to adhere to tight production schedules are critical for this position.


Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, Communications, Journalism, or a related field required; other degrees will be considered if experience is applicable; or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.


  • At least three years of experience in writing and editing that includes production of technical manuals/documentation as well as an array of non-technical materials.
  • Experience executing traditional and interactive copy strategies such as web content development, e-mail campaigns, and related strategies.


  • Familiarity with reading and interpreting complex written material, including educational and statistical concepts, research data, and technical terminology
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely
  • Excellent proofreading skills (both paper and electronic format materials)
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with accuracy, detail, and timeliness
  • Ability to set specific goals and priorities
  • Ability to establish and meet deadlines, work under pressure, and handle multiple priorities
  • Must display positive interpersonal skills
  • Must possess a team player attitude and ability to work well with others
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Working knowledge of design layout programs (such as InDesign, etc.)
