Community Outreach Internship Program (COIP)

Promising Practice

Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) revised the curriculum and instructional component of their innovative COIP program. The purpose of the COIP program is to provide a clear pathway for students to gain the skills necessary to obtain meaningful employment within the University of California San Francisco system.

Summary Description of Project:

The Community Outreach Internship Program is a collaborative effort between Jewish Vocational Services (JVS) and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). The goal is to recruit and train students for quality employment within the UCSF system. JVS and UCSF designed the program to prepare clients for medical administrative roles at the UCSF Medical Center as well as general administrative roles within the University. Participants are trained in basic core competencies including computer skills, simple business writing, basic professional reading skills, math and financial literacy, and soft skills. Once participants complete training, they are placed in various clerical/administrative internships at UCSF. COIP has proven to be an effective method of providing employment opportunities for low-skilled, disadvantaged job-seekers.

Evaluation Process/Results:

The close relationship between JVS and UCSF allows the agency to  remain in contact with students even after they leave the adult education program and start working. JVS is able to track students after placement, and is able to gather their feedback after exiting the adult education program. The 2010 cycle of COIP resulted in 12 full-time job placements at UCSF, and numerous other internship and temporary employment opportunities for students. 18 out of the 20 students that participated in COIP in 2010 demonstrated significant gains on CASAS assessments, and the agency overall has exceeded California state performance and persistence levels for the past two program years.
