The Challenge The Goodwin's Mills Fire and Rescue (GMFR) in Lymann, Maine, provides fire and rescue service to more than 6,000 residents. To increase safety and improve the quality of service, GMFR wanted to implement a reading comprehension exam as part of the hiring process for all employees, volunteers, and career personnel — and wanted to implement this new screening/hiring process within one month.
The Solution
GMFR reviewed several assessment options, and a local adult education leader recommended CASAS. GMFR chose to use CASAS eTests because they were impressed with the variety of tests available, the ease of use, the data reports, the overall value to make the investment worthwhile, and the helpfulness of CASAS employees. GMFR representative Ben Harris explained, “We are happy we chose CASAS eTests.”
The Outcome
A reading comprehension and physical abilities test are now required for all potential employees at Goodwin’s Mills Fire and Rescue. Using CASAS eTests allows the agency to screen applicants and hire competent staff able to perform safely on the job. Harris said, “The Goodwin's Mills Fire Department used CASAS eTests for the first time Saturday as part of our hiring process. We were very impressed! I received several comments from both candidates and others involved in the hiring process about how professional the testing process is.”
Because of the successful use of CASAS eTests for the hiring process, GMFR has also decided to implement CASAS eTests in other areas such as officer promotion, application for funds for college-level EMT classes, and other training programs. GMFR can be certain that employees have the skills to succeed on the job and in training. Harris further emphasized, “This will help us have a higher success rate and reduce costs.”
